Two week wait: 10 great tips for IVF patients

Two week wait: 10 great tips for IVF patients

The two week wait. Read the IVF forums and you’ll see what an emotionally difficult time it is. For those who find it tough, there are ways to cope and even to improve your chances of a positive pregnancy result. Based on our own experience, and those of our patients, these are our top 10 tips for surviving the two week wait.

1. Go easy after your transfer.

The two week wait begins the moment your embryo transfer is over. Starting from then, avoid heavy lifting, hot baths and rigorous exercise. If you’re having your IVF treatment abroad, you’ll have a suitcase. Don’t touch it after ET day. Get your partner to take care of it – especially when it needs to be stuffed in the overhead locker on the plane home.

2. Take the whole two weeks off – or at least the first.

Okay, so you took time off to have your IVF treatment. Don’t be shy about asking for more time away from the office. This is your life and your baby. Nothing is more important. Embryo implantation takes place one to five days after transfer. Stress and anxiety don’t help.

If you can’t take the entire two week wait off, go for the first seven days. Stay at home, watch Netflix, and talk to the cat if your partner’s not around. If you’re worried your extra holiday request will backfire, get a doctor’s note. (You could even ask your clinic or patient coordinator for this.)

3. Take your medication – religiously.

It’s actually quite easy to forget to take your medication in the two week wait. You’re lulled into a false sense of security: the hard bit’s over. But your fertility drugs are keeping your embryo alive and your uterine environment optimal. Create a chart or reminder system, ideally on your phone, for your daily medication regime. Use your phone alarm for added peace of mind.

If you’re taking estrogen pills, say three pills daily, it’s fine (and easier to remember) to take one pill each mealtime. Spacing them every eight hours of not needed. If you’re on twice-daily progesterone (e.g. Utrogestan) a 12-hour gap is best. Crinone? Bedtime application is a good idea – again, easy to schedule. If you’re on daily Clexane injections, taking it at exactly the same time each day is important, So set the loudest alarm for that.

4. Spotting and bleeding? Don’t panic.

Spotting and light bleeding can happen in the two week wait. And brown discharge. Try not to worry: it’s statistically more likely to be okay than not. Your uterus is under pressure from your meds and your embryo. Leakage (can’t think of a better word) can happen.

Talk to your clinic if you’re concerned. It may say you shouldn’t increase your estrogen and progesterone support (to counteract the bleeding) until the two week wait is up. Remember the adage: bleeding is not always bad.

5. Consider blood thinners – kill that clot.

The jury’s out on whether blood thinners, like low-dose aspirin and Clexane, protect a pregnancy. Ask your clinic if you should take either, or both, from transfer day or before. Small clots can cause implantation failure or miscarriage. Thinning the blood may help.

It all depends on your fertility history, but since the two week wait is a key moment, anticoagulants might just help. Baby aspirin is the low-cost, low-risk option. Talk to your doctor at transfer – clinics sometimes need a push on this.

6. Eat well – and get lots of rest (but not too much).

The two week wait isn’t pleasant – we can all agree on that. Emotions and nerves can, if you let them, get the better of you. But avoid that chocolate cake, ditch the caffeine and put the wine back in the fridge. Now’s the time, more than ever, to eat a balanced, healthy diet.

Ignore the nonsense online about eating particular foods to aid implantation. Go for an even mix of vegetables, fruit, pulses, carbs and proteins. Read our blog post on the perfect IVF diet. And don’t spend too long in bed: the latest research says prolonged bed rest post-transfer won’t improve your pregnancy chances and might make them worse.

7. Don’t test early, or expect pregnancy symptoms.

Testing early – e.g. half way through the two week wait – is pointless. After an own-egg IVF cycle, the HCG in your body could give you a false positive or negative. Wait for 14 days after your transfer, then test. Had donor eggs or an FET? Test early if you must. But you’ll only do another one at the right time. Patience can be less stressful. So put that Clearblue box back in the box and watch another series of Better Call Saul.

Patience applies to pregnancy symptoms as well. I didn’t feel pregnant at all in my two week wait. But I still had a beautiful baby 36 weeks later. So try your best not to obsess.

8. No sex – your uterus won’t like it.

Sex immediately after an IVF cycle is not a good move. Infections can happen and your uterus can do without the commotion. Leave your partner to his own devices, comforting as the idea of sex might be during the two week wait. You may even feel a bit sexy: blame that on the hormones you’ve been taking. Masturbation? Not recommended.

9. Twinges and cramps – oddly reassuring?

Twinges and cramps during the two week wait are common. Try not to panic: your womb is in overdrive. In fact, those feelings may mean implantation. If you experience more intense cramping, with or without bleeding, call your doctor. But do remember: most uterine movements in the two week wait are nothing to worry about. Chances are, there’s some serious baby making going on.

10. Expect the worst and hope for the best.

No IVF cycle is guaranteed – and we always tell our patients to set realistic expectations. The two week wait is make or break: that’s a fact. But follow the above tips to keep your pregnancy chances as high as possible. Avoid social media, keep positive and hunker down. And if it’s a positive result, there’s no better time to calculate your IVF due date!

I had a day-5 ET on 30th August and I am on the two-week wait. Experiencing a lot of pain in both my thighs, and cramps in lower abdomen this morning. This is my third IVF after last 2 attempts failed. I am really worried. It’s 9 days since 2 nice grade-2 blastocysts were put in. Can I do my urine test at least?

I have been advised by my clinic that intercourse after transfer is fine. I’ve also read it can be beneficial. This issue is one that is contradicted throughout all the advice forums. I know it’s better to be safe than sorry but what if it is beneficial and can increase our chances!!! Currently on the two week wait second time round and googling like a mad woman! Good luck everyone X

Hello. I am on my 2nd try. This time natural cycle FET. I must say as much is embarrassing the topic, I wish I could have found more certain info about intercourse/masturbation and orgasm after embryo transfer. It was so difficult for me this time on the first day after transfer not to help my self out with all the excitement that I was feeling, but then I found some negative comments about masturbating and orgasm that can cause uterus contractions that do not help embryo implementation apparently. I must say I found opposite opinions about this topic and I was wondering the same matter as you. I wish the doctors have explained this part as now I am going mental if I have destroyed my chances or not. Did you get to find the certain answer and how did your IVF go?

I’m not feeling anything only very mild cramp in my ovaries but I had contractions same day of transfer don’t know if it’s bad. My blastocytes before freezing were type A I don’t know if I have a chance this time after my failed attempt with the fresh blastocytes in august last year. I don’t think I can repeat this hard procedure of IVF again. May God help me and give me courage to continue. Good luck everyone. Pray for me

Seems like cramping and light spitting are normal. I don’t see anyone come back and post after their 2ww to let us know if they’ve successfully gotten pregnant and reach their 3 mths pregnancy. It would give the rest of us a much needed hope.

Hi ladies & spouses! This is my 3rd day after transfer, most refer to as 2ww. It is also my 3rd IVF cycle, I am an Asian lady approaching my 40. Had 2 failed IVF cycle, all frozen embryos. I was OHSS twice which meant a trip to ER. It was horrible but I survived. Doc had me take 1-2 mths off and froze my embryos. I do have mild cramps. My nurse said it was ok to take mild Tylenol if too painful. Stayed in bed and had hubby bring me food for 3 days, sounds yucky but I didn’t shower for 3days, just wiped with soap & warm water. Ate dried figs, Brazilian nuts, pineapple & peanut butter. Drank juices, especially beet juices. Heard these items help prevent miscarriage. I hope everyone is doing well. If you’re having a lot of pain, swelling or heavy bleeding please please call your doctor or go to emergency. Better safe than sorry. After all it’s your health. Wishing everyone success and good health! Cheers…

      Hey

I was wondering how it went? I’m turning 40 in October, and having IVF in November.

Cheers…

Today is Day2 of frozen embryos transfer . This is the 3rd times. Feeling more relaxing compare to the previous ones. Feeling a bit warm, it may due to the progesterone that I m taking. Hope for the best , and to u all wonderful people too.

Hi everyone – have you experienced cramping in 2 week wait after transfer? I was feeling a little nauseous and tired 3 days ago but now just a bit crampy and boobs are normal. I should be testing today but its my daughters first day at school and I couldn’t face a negative test. After 3 years of trying with nothing happening and a failed (and traumatic first go at IVF) its all a bit too much…. 🙁 Hope is dwindling…. any reassurance out there?

Oh my goodness, today is the last day of our 2ww. I had my appointment this mornign and I’m finding it terribly hard to focus while we wait for the call that reveals the results of the bloodwork. If I had a choice, I would have taken off work today as well and Netflixed it. See if it’s a positive result, I’d love to be with my husband to celebrate the news. If its negative, it would be nice to comfort each other and not have to maintain professionalism at work. Taking time off is solid advice, if you can swing it! We’ll probably hear in about 4 hours. Wish me luck. And best of luck to all of you.

I also kept a journal with my second transfer and the symptoms matchs this time’s fet. I hope it’s a good one! Did any one of you had a very, VERY early BFP?

Hello ladies, I’m day five after a 3dt of what my consultant described as 2 low grade fresh embryos one with 50% fragmentation and one with 50% mishaped cells, both were 8 cells at time of transfer. I’m 37 and healthy. Has anyone had success with similar embryos as I felt the reproductive centre gave me little hope and it was just a case of put them back in she’s paid her money! Just so hard! Any advice, support would be greatly received! Baby dust to all xxxxxx

      Hi Katherine,

i myself am on day 11 after 5 day transfer, two grade 1 blastocyst stage from egg donation. It’s my first go at it, the 15 day wait is a rollercoaster ride. i live in Austria, had treatment done in Czech Republic at a private clinic.
getting pregnant without help is no longer possible for me, 43 yrs. old, fallopian tube rightside is non functional, 3 miscarriages in the past with normal pregnancies. so egg donation is my best bet.

I can only tell you patience is what we have to have, i know it is easier said than done, Keep telling myself to wait and be positive, there are no certainties in such a complex procedure called life.
I would suggest you call your center when you have questions, or get second opinion if you are not happy with the service afterwards. my clinic has a great after transfer service, i wrote them a mail yesterday due to light brown discharge, i nearly lost my wits when i saw it. they immediately replied and changed my dosage of meds.
Will do preg. test tomorrow, so i am quite nervous about the results, like i said, there are no certainties. Hope at least one of the two little ones made it, and will keep on making it till the crucial 3 months are past.

Will keep fingers crossed it will all work out for all of us here.

      Hi everyone !

did a home pregnancy test today, came back positive ! test at hospital was positive too, and blood test result, HCG level at 670 mIU/ml. so good news, now i just have to make it past these long 3 months, my next goal is ultrasound in 14 days, i need to set myself these short goals, so the wait does not seem so long when i can finally stop taking all these meds and hold a healthy baby in my arms,
so am i happy ? yes, but i am still wary of letting my hopes getting up to high, small goals, i can only achieve them one by one.
Doie anyone else do the same ?
would love to hear any thoughts, baby dust to all !!

You mentioned that you did your IVF in another country, did travel by flight? Is it safe? FYI, I recently did my ET at another country too, but just preparing myself in the event that it’s positive…should I remain for 3 months, or it’s safe enough to fly home? Any thoughts?

I had my ET done in Prag, so i went by car, i was driven home by my hubby, went home right after the transfer.
Ask your doc if ok to fly, i have no idea if it is ok.
Had some brown spotting yesterday so i am trying not to worry too much, i can only hope some serious nest building is going on in there !
Keep fingers crossed all is still well. My first ultrasound is next Werk. Pray my sprout will be having a blast in my womb. Wish you all the baby dust in this world Lina ! Much love…..

    Hi,
I’m panicking. My beta on 04/27/17 was 846. Did a second beta today. Don’t have results yet. However, yesterday I noticed a little blood clot as I showered. Please don’t be grossed out but I stock my finger inside & smelled it. It was a foul smell. Today I noticed bleeding. Light bleeding like the start of a period. I can still notice the foul odor. Never experienced this before. Does this mean I had a miscarriage? Why this foul odor? Please someone help me out. Has anyone have a similar situation?

My clinic has postcard notes all over the office that you can pick up and take home. My favourite one is:
    “Trust the wait
    Embrace the uncertainty
    Enjoy the beauty
    of becoming.
When nothing is certain, anything I possible.”

I’m 4 days post FET and I have re-read this maybe a thousand times! Hope it helps!

After being diagnosed with endometriosis, our only option was to through ivf. I am 36 yo and never being pregnant. Never felt such a terrible pain as during the egg removal ( it was just local anaesthetics, I would have preferred to be knocked out) and embryo transfer was done at the second day after the removal. A lovely embryo with 4 bubbles 🙂 Now is day 14 after ET as still have to wait 1 more week to know if our efforts paid off. The clinic suggested 3 weeks instead of 2 weeks of waiting. I feel mild cramping and tender breasts, let’s hope for the best!

I had embryo transfer on 21 May, on the 28th May I had a small brown discharge with I supposed was implantation bleeding. the clinic gave me a test date as 2nd June which was 12 days after the embryo transfer. I did a test that day and it was negative, I was kind of confused bc I saw implantion bleeding earlier. Then my husband made me have sex that day and I started bleeding just after the sex stuff which made me angry cos I felt I jeopardised my chance of pregnancy. Then I came across many articles that said to test 14 days after embryo transfer. I felt the clinic gave me an early test date which kind messed things up for me cos now I’m thinking if I had tested at 14 days maybe I may still have a chance but now I tested earlier and bc the result was negative my husband thought there was no need to wait so let’s have sex which I hesitated at first then finally gave in to please him. Now I feel stupid for doing that and I am angry at myself,my husband and the clinic. Do I still have a chance that I may still be pregnant even though am bleeding lightly. Cos the clinic asked me to retest again on day 14.

i don’t think having sex can jeopardise your chances of an implantation. it think you did test early and i’m not sure how long ago this was but test again. if not then it is negative but it is not the clinic or your hubby’s fault maybe don’t stress about it , because stress doesn’t help either.

Hi Cece, sorry to hear your worries which are entirely understandable. The pregnancy test is usually done on day 14 of egg collection (meaning starting from day 12 of embryo transfer), so your clinic was right to suggest so and the test was truly negative. Unfortunately, some spotting does not always mean successful implantation. On the other hand, it’s a good idea to repeat the test, as nature is sometimes strange. There have been normal pregnancies with some period-like bleeding. And sex at this stage should not affect your chances for pregnancy. So, please don’t blame yourself, your husband or your clinic, you did everything correctly! I wish you the best of luck! If this time was not a lucky one, the next time might very well be! 🙂 PS. Waiting for my egg collection tomorrow. Only one follicle, but I keep my fingers crossed…

I wonder if anyone can help with advice? I am now day 8 after transfer I noticed the discharge from the pesseries had a pink tinge a couple of hours ago and has just turned heavier and browner (sorry!) I rang my clinic with the pink spotting and they said not to worry , I asked about upping the pessary dose maybe and they said they don’t do that… is there anything I can do? I’m so heartbroken

After three failed cycles I was keeping my hope very shallow. What meant to be it will be. Good luck ladies.

@Vani, any news? I have kept my fingers crossed for you.
I am on my 10th try, I have done fresh & frozen, medicated and non. This time I had x2 5d blasts FET(100% and one hatching) transferred on 9th.
I have had lower back pain and some mild cramping, I also have slight pink discharge mainly in the morning. I keep hoping everything will be fine but as you all know the wait is killer and you’re not safe even with BFP until you have a baby in your arms.
Good luck all! sticky baby dust all round!

Hi everyone! today is my day 12 of Day3 embryo transfer. I did HPT today and it came out negative 🙁 but my breasts are sore, back sore and feeling tired everyday,on and of lower abdomen cramps ( but just light cramps) eating more for the past 3 days and I get dizzy most of the time. Is there hope? I’m worried and can’t really sleep at night thinking about the HPT result.

Today is day 9 of transfer embryo back into my uterus. Yesterday evening I had lots of cramps, and then i went to the washroom I had red blood on my toilet paper. For the rest of the night I cried knowing that the IVF didn’t work. Every time I went to the washroom I had blood on the toilet paper, and red blood, not brown or light pink. After a hard night sleep I woke up to no blood this morning. I know what happen yesterday was not a good sign, but then today nothing, Does that mean I could still have hope?

Hi I had an unsuccessful FET 10/2016 with one 4BC embryo. I bled heavily after 3 days of transfer that time and knew it didn’t take but my IVF facility wanted to be reassuring. I just underwent a new fresh IVF and transferred day 5 12/06/17 two 6AA embryos. I’m so nervous about this outcome and have tried to be optimistic as possible. Hoping this goes well. Being on this blog gives me some positive and negative insight. I’m hoping with the diet change of myself and my partner prior to restarting this process has some effect on these sticking this time. The IVF diet gave me some hope being as though we followed a low carb diet and my partner no longer eats meat or dairy.

I am 39, first IVF cycle and had two embryos implanted – both ‘moderate’ quality. I think they said CC level… it’s a bit of a blur now though.

I had my transfer last Tuesday, 6th feb. Had lots of cramps and pains since then but convinced my self it was implantation. I had really bad period pains last night and this morning, started light bleeding. Gutted. I’m not due to do my HPT until Monday.., should I do one now anyway?? Hope someone is there to help/advise! I couldn’t help myself, so I took a first response test today and the second line faint, but very vissable. I didn’t take any trigger shot, I did however had acupuncture and taking my estradiol and progesterone shots. I am going to take another test early in the morning again. My HCG test is scheduled for the 27th. So as much as I am a little more relax now, but I still want confirmation.

Good luck and baby sticking dust to you all ladies.

Good luck and baby sticking dust to you all ladies.

I just wanted to share with you ladies. I took three FRER test and all had a faint line, started 7 days before my scheduled blood test 2/28/18. So I started testing on 21st and my 5de frozen transfer was done on 2/16/18. I was panicking and googled myself half to death. Started having migraine which is my first sign of period coming yesterday nonstop… (still have it) this made me more scared. One goggled site said faint line could be from diluted urine if you’re drinking too much water, which I was!!! So I drank apple juice only today, no water, waited 3 hours and this time double the test, one store brand with two blue line clear as day and a first response digital with YES+!!!!!!! So happy I started crying. We put our only two great embryos and am hoping both took!!!!!! Good luck to you ladies. I wish you all baby sticking dust!!! Also after my two faint line, I had take clear blue digital on the 22nd that said Negative!!! Just for further affirmations I will take the other clear blue digital tomorrow just to read the words Pregnant!!!! But definitely no more worries.

I had my FET on march 3rd 2018 and doctor told me to wait for 2weeks..my schedule blood test is on march 19th 2018..3 days to go!!!i took a home pregnancy test on day 12th and 13th it shows me 2 faint lines positive on both the days but apart from little cramping i am not having any symptoms.i dont know how to feel..can you please tell me did i test too early?

No you didn’t test too early. I tested 5 days after my 5dft and it was a faint line. Once there’s a line no matter how faint, it’s BFP!!! So congratulations.

I am now 8 wks and sadly one of my twin is vanishing at every ultrasound… So I’m grateful for my Singleton but I still mourn my other one. I’m happy and sad at the same time.

I had 3 embryos fresh transferred on March 6th so the 2WW is almost over! It’s been so tough though. I’ve had a little bit of nausea the past couple days and my breasts feel a little swollen. It could be the hormones causing that as well but I can’t help feeling hopeful:) My husband seems to have a better time putting it out of his mind but the meds and the fact that it’s in my body makes it hard to ignore!

I’ve had cramps since transfer and a few days I’ve felt sick and dizzy, but other that that nothing. Have you had your test yet? I’ve got everything crossed for you and hoping for good news xxx

I just did my last transfer on 24/03/2018 and have to wait until 04/04/2018 to find out results.
I’ve had a failed transfer in December 2017 and the thought of this also failing is really scary for my Mental health.
Anyone have any tips on how to distract myself for the next 8 nights?

I’m on my 6th day post FET, and I’m trying my best not to test early, at least not till my 12th day. This is my 2nd try. Since my FET day, I’m feeling bloated, and crampy, no headaches though. I’m been eating pineapple core everyday since day 1, I read brazil nuts help a lot as well, but I couldn’t find any store nearby my area. Pistachios okay? Sending baby dust to all ladies here

I had my first FET on 3/22/18 and had the chance to have 2 put back. This 2 week wait is a little nerve reckoning. I take my test on 04/05/18. The only symptom l’ve experienced is the cramping (which started noticeably 3 days after transfer). I’m trying so hard not to do a HPT (if I do it will be closer to my appt), so I try to take my mind off of it by doing activities I enjoy. Staying positive and staying on your meds is very important (from what I heard). Praying for all the ladies experiencing the 2WW period.

Hi ladies, I had a fresh 5 day embryo transfer yesterday, they transferred two healthy (egg donor & husband’s sperm) embryos successfully. I am 43 years old, but my husband is only 30. He’s hoping for twins whereas I am hoping for just one baby, twins might just kill me at my age lol! Anyways, any ladies in here in their 40’s had success with donor egg embryos? The dr said my uterus is perfect and that age has no bearing on whether or not they’ll implant, but I feel like I’m making a fool of myself trying at my age and that they are not going to take. Looking for some success stories to ease my mind until my blood test the 25th. Thanks and God bless!

I am also 43! My husband is the same age. It It feels good to know Im not on my own here! I, like you also had 2 embryo transfers on the 19th June! We were a little cautious about have 2 transferred given the likelihood of twins, although now I feel that if we have twins then it will be like having two for the price of one, so to speak!

My gosh its such an emotional roller coaster. I think its great that you are trying to conceive regardless of age, if thats what you want to do. I wish you all the best x

      Hi Miranda,

I just came across this forum and thought how similar my situation is to yours. I’m 40 years old and my husband is 28. I’m currently on day 7 post transfer and day 5 of 2 fresh embryos transfer. I’m really nervous bcz I was heavy stronger symptoms of tender breasts, cramping and bloating for the first 4-5 days and now the last couple of days haven’t been the same. Just slight twinging that’s it. I’m curious how did your ivf results come out? I hope by now you have beautiful twins! Or at least one healthy baby. I’m so scared. Plus my period is due in 2 days so I probably would know before the 14 day mark since aunt flow is always on time.

I am on day 6 of my FET. I have had one failed and one successful IVF but lost the baby at 4months. It’s been a roller coaster for me. My husband is not supportive as he has given up and it’s affecting me emotional. My progesterone level was really low before the transfer and I am on the booster injections on my buttocks for the whole of the two weeks wait. At the moment I am in pain from the injection, stress at work, with a none supportive husband coupled with the whole anxiety that come with this treatment. I really need help with advice.

Don’t feel vulnerable. Feel your inner strength because I feel this way we will be in bliss. Any sort of negativity is not desirable this time. I myself is not over-confident but very hopeful for getting things fall in place. So just try to indulge in stuffs which makes you happy & relieve your stress. Gus luck dear!!!

Today is my 5 day of embryo transfer and feeling irritated is the worst. The 17th will be my pregnancy test.

I am on day 9 of a FET (5-day blasto-cyst), my test date is 20th Feb. Had quite a bit of brown spotting this time (this is my 2nd try) and am trying to think positive, but it is hard, especially when you are second guessing each and every twinge and was so disappointed when we got the negative result last time.

Trying not to get our hopes up and stay as relaxed as possible, whilst being curiously excited (such a mixed bag of feelings!)

Also been getting very irritated (mostly with my other half over nothing) which isn’t great.

Fingers crossed this will all be worth it. These two weeks are the longest ever!! Such a roller coaster

I am in my 6th day after embryo transfer. All I’ve been doing is stressing. Been after cramps off and on ever since the next day after transfer. Getting irritated very easy and all I can think of is it must be my period coming. I get bloodwork in 7 days, that’s when my period is due

I had a symptom of spotting , cramping and my BBT also increased after my embryo transfer…
Many told that the result Will be positive…
But my result is negative.. I’m confused and worried.. I asked my doctor,he told that my implantation might be successful , i got the negative result because of decreased blood flow to my uterus….. Is this a valid reason???
    Can anybody clarify me???

your cramps are normal, progesterone surging through you body in high does is going to give you symptoms of PMS – its normal you will be fine! don’t be scared its okay. Be patient, BE happy, if you had FET you have what it takes to start a new life…rest relax enjoy think positive thoughts…chances are good since it is in you and not in a dish 🙂 I am 53 and just had my first transfer two days ago – simply over joyed that this even exists as a possibility to be a mom again.

In all your excitement don’t lose track of the goal… a baby. stressing won’t help- wait until 12 days after your transfer, be sad or scared but dont’t be defeated.. no two transfers are alike and implantation occurs differently from blastocyst to blastocyst. Your body won’t produce the hormone HCG in quantities high enough to trigger a positive pregnancy and implantation in FET can take up to a few days after the transfer. It isn’t immediate. therefore, you won’t get a positive result if it is too early. 12 days after transfer and then you will know for sure.

The embryo transfer is probably the least painful part of the whole process. It’s very quick, they just slide a thin tube through the cervix into the uterus using ultrasound to see where they’re going, then squirt the embryo out and you’re done. The worst bit is you have to have a full bladder!

I had very painful IUD put in years ago, then the same immense pain doing a tube flush test, and then again very painful sonogram of my uterus so I was also very afraid of the embryo transfer. Honestly, it was so pain free I was surprised! My doctor prescribed an Ativan to relax me before going in so I think it helped my not be so tense, the cervix is a muscle! Good luck

Thank You ladies for sharing your fears and stories. I would Love to read more follow up posts after the testing with results. I am 42 first time IVF with my initial bloodwork scheduled for tomorrow. The egg retrieval and transfer were both painless. The anesthesia given to me on the day of retrieval caused me to feel constipated and uncomfortable – it passed within 24 hours. I have swollen and very sensitive breast and very severe mood swings. This two week wait has been challenging but it has been helpful to talk openly about this process with my friends who have babies – and even spending time with their babies has been a delight! Please keep me in your thoughts for tomorrow’s test.

We did ICSI as doc said because of my husband’s sperm quality and that I have a low reserve so we shouldn’t waste time. 4 eggs retrieved, resulted in 3 embryos after 5-days cultivation. We had 1 embryo transferred and two frozen last Monday.

I started having cramps next day, was tired all the time, high appetite, mood change. All symptoms over the past week indicated good results. I even started having back pain two days ago.

However, today (it is exactly 7 days since 5-day embryo transfer) I saw spotting which by night turned into blood clots (actually heavier bleeding than I usually have on my periods). I don’t feel any cramps or other symptoms anymore. It feels like I’m having my period. Does it mean my cycle failed?

My blood test is in 3 days and I’m sitting here devastated in tears.

Hello, I’m glad I can read experiences from everyone, I’m at ease now. My transfer was on the 7th of February, am I suppose to count from that day as day 1 or the next day? Secondly I have been experiencing cramps and back pain, is it a good sign since its still early after the transfer? Thanks.

I’m 45 and getting ready for my transfer om March 9th. I had 8 blasts but 6 came back abnormal and 2 were untested. I’m having the 2 untested embryos transferred and just hoping for the best but trying to prepare for the worst. Has anyone had success with this sort of situation after PGS testing on the blasts? I started with 14 eggs. Already feeling like a failure. I know our chances are super low so we’ll see what happens. Praying!

I am actually in the same boat. 14 eggs, 8 developed but after pgs only 2 survived. I am currently in the 2ww after transfer. Beta will be on Wednesday. Hoping for the best, although at this point I am not very hopeful. I already had 2 failed attempts in my previous cycle.

I was in a similar situation with having issues with my embryos. I ended up with an egg donor. I had one egg donor embryo transferred, resulting in a pregnancy. Sadly I had a miscarriage. I have since had a fibroid surgery and another transfer. I am in my two week wait. It’s just nerve wracking. I hope you had better luck with yours.

Don’t listen to statistics and stay positive. I was 42 when I started IVF, had 14 eggs retrieved but after PGS testing ended up with 4 good embryos. Had a failed transfer then had a positive transfer. Now at 43, have a beautiful baby girl. I stayed away from the internet and statistics. My advice, be positive and don’t give up!

Hi I know I’m late dis ur msg is over a yr old. Hope u were actually pregnant and had d baby and d baby is growing well. Pls don’t ever say u are a failure. What ever u do put ur trust in God and he would c u through. Everything happens for a reason. I have also had 2 failed IVF last yr and I’m on my third but I’m hopeful. I don’t feel anything but I strongly believe I am pregnant bcos I have prayed to God and I know he answers all prayers but hey if my result comes out negative, it won’t be d end of the world. I guess God has something better in store for me.

Hi! Today is my day 10 of my First fresh embryo transfer. Yesterday before i went to my blood test pregnancy test, i did the home pregnancy test and i wait for my results and turn out negative, but i found out that no line on the control window then i read the instruction at it says that if no Blue lines appears on the control window within 10 minutes the test has not worked. This is my assurance to think positive. The ivf is not informing yet on my result. But i am very paranoid because i never felt any pregnancy symptoms.

Hi everyone, I’m on day 7 of my 5 day old FET. I started off feeling cramping and some bloating but now I’m not feeling that anymore and am becoming quite worried. I’m really tempted to try an at home pregnancy test but know that it’s not a good idea. I have my pregnancy test at my clinic scheduled on day 10 (3 days from now). I am trying to stay positive and reading your comments really helps me feel like I’m not alone. So thank you all so much for sharing your experiences.

Sometimes I even visualize that I’m carrying them safe so that I stay positive. I’ve my blood test in 3 days time at the clinic but I’m deciding to take the test at home on my 10th day (specially just to prevent me from crying at the clinic)
