A hysteroscopy is a procedure that checks the health of your uterus and cervix, treating any problems surgically if necessary. It’s minimally invasive. A thin tube with camera attached is passed through your vagina into your uterus. A polypectomy, or endometrial polyp removal, is the most common form of operative hysteroscopy. Cervical polyp removal is also possible. Most problematic fibroids can also be removed quickly and easily (myomectomy).
Abnormal bleeding can be investigated under a hysteroscopy. In fact, bleeding is often the trigger for a diagnostic hysteroscopy. Endometrial ablation can also be performed, where some of the endometrial lining is treated to stop the bleeding. Endometrial adhesions, or Asherman’s syndrome, are bands of scar tissue that can also be treated during a hysteroscopy.
For fertility patients, a hysteroscopy is helpful in diagnosing issues that may affect fertility or cause repeated miscarriages. A hysteroscopy is also a good way to remove an intrauterine device. Placental tissue that has remained in the uterus after birth can also be collected in a hysteroscopy.
In summary...
A hysteroscopy is a relatively simple procedure that causes minimal discomfort. It’s effective in locating and treating a range of uterine conditions – the most common of which are uterine polyps and fibroids.
