Embryo transfer is a big IVF moment – medically and emotionally. It’s the point where weeks of scans, appointments and conversations have been heading. And while no tip can guarantee your embryo will implant, the right approach can help you handle certain issues and give your transfer the best possible chance.
Most embryo transfer tips are myths. Be wary of persuasive (and usually false) claims online. You don’t need bed rest, handstands, or daily pineapple. Focus on advice from the medical profession – from your doctor, clinic, and the best research studies. There are no miracle solutions.
Here are 10 evidence-based embryo transfer tips that could help.
1. Choose a clinic that follows ALL the embryo transfer guidelines
Embryo transfer isn’t a minor step. It’s the final and most delicate part of IVF. Your clinic’s approach matters.
Professional guidance on performing an embryo transfer supports ultrasound-guided transfers, linked to better pregnancy outcomes. A quick, uneventful transfer, using the right catheter, with minimal uterine irritation, is best practice.
It might be an awkward conversation, but ask your clinic if it routinely uses trans-abdominal ultrasound during the procedure. And whether difficult transfers are anticipated in advance. A well-planned transfer is what you want – not guesswork on the day.
2. If your embryo transfer may be difficult, consider a mock transfer
A mock (dummy) embryo transfer isn’t needed for all fertility patients. But it’s an option if there are concerns about cervical access, choice of catheter, uterine position, unwieldy fibroids, or any other issue. If you had a difficult transfer in the past, a mock transfer is a must.
Have it before you treatment cycle starts. Or the day before ET. Whether you need a mock transfer is ultimately down to your clinic’s judgment. There’s no need for all first-time IVF patients to have one. But your case may be different.
On the catheter point, a flexible one is usually best. But a stiff catheter may be needed if your uterus or cervical canal are anatomically challenging. Only a dummy run can decide which is best.
3. Treat a hydrosalpinx before transfer
A hydrosalpinx can seriously reduce IVF success. This is one of the clearest embryo transfer ‘risks’ that needs fixing first.
A hydrosalpinx is fluid in one, or both, fallopian tubes. That fluid can leak into the uterus and threaten implantation. A recent major study supports hydrosalpinx surgery – especially tubal removal – as a way to boost clinical pregnancy and live birth rates. Tubal occlusion may also work for certain patents.
If a pre-treatment scan, hysterosalpingogram, or your medical history suggests a hydrosalpinx, don’t ignore it. Deal with this significant implantation hazard before your transfer.
4. Optimise your uterine environment – not just your embryo
Embryo quality matters. As does the quality of the uterus receiving it. Before transfer, your clinic should be confident that the timing is right, your endometrium looks good, and your hormonal support is well managed
Timing-wise, transfers are typically carried out on day 19, 20 or 21 of your stimulation. Earlier or later transfers are sometimes acceptable or necessary. In an IVF cycle using your own eggs, if your follicles grow too slow or too fast, it’s the trigger shot that determines egg retrieval day, and therefore the day of your fresh embryo transfer.
In terms of your endometrium, a transfer can usually go ahead if your lining thickness is at least 7 mm by the time you add in your progesterone, and if it’s trilaminar. A pre-treatment scan should identity any uterine anomalies well before you start a treatment cycle.
Progesterone support, usually starting five days before embryo transfer and continuing for several weeks after it, is very important.
5. Take the right supplement – and build in folic acid
Folic acid isn’t optional. If you’re trying to conceive via IVF, or naturally, the same pre-conception rules apply. Take 400 mcg of folic acid daily before conception and in early pregnancy to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. A higher dose is sometimes needed.
A good fertility multivitamin is best, and one which includes vitamin D. Steer clear of so-called fertility superfoods and unproven supplements. Eat a sensible, balanced diet.
6. Transfer the right number of embryos
Transferring two embryos doesn’t always mean better odds. For most patients, especially when a good-quality blastocyst is available, single embryo transfer is the safest option. It reduces the risk of a multiple pregnancy, and associated complications, without impacting success rates much.
Guidance from ESHRE supports an approach to the embryo number based on patient age, prognosis, embryo stage, and whether genetic testing has been used. The aim is not a pregnancy at all costs – one at a time is mostly best.
For some older patients, or those with a poorer pregnancy or implantation prognosis, transferring more than one embryo could still be an option. But this should be a medical decision. Your safety, and your pregnancy’s, is paramount.
7. Skip bed rest after embryo transfer
You don’t need to stay in bed after embryo transfer. This is one of the most persistent IVF myths, and the evidence doesn’t support it. A recent study trial found no benefit from bed rest after embryo transfer.
Gentle movement is fine. Walking, sitting, working at a calm pace, and ordinary tasks are okay – unless your clinic says otherwise. Even resting for more than 20 minutes immediately after your transfer may be unwise. A normal, active routine is the way to go.
8. Keep post-transfer life calm – not heavy
The days and weeks after embryo transfer aren’t the moment for punishing workouts or frenetic activity. Our tips on what to do, and what to avoid, during the two-week wait are worth reading. The general rule? Take it easy.
Most clinics advise against heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, hot tubs and showers, and alcohol. Moderate activity is usually fine. Good sleep, regular meals and hydration are key. As is remembering to take your medication, and weaning off them as instructed.
9. Manage stress realistically – don’t chase online miracles
Stress is very real during IVF. Many patients ask if reducing stress around the time of embryo transfer helps. The evidence is mixed. Studies suggest that chronic stress around embryo transfer may affect the outcome – but not ‘everyday’ stress.
Away from the research, ask yourself what feels reasonable before and after your transfer. Limiting unnecessary stress, reducing work pressures, avoiding the negatives online, and turning to supportive family and friends are all sensible.
If something helps you feel better – a walk, meditation, a film, music, counselling, acupuncture – do it. None of these guarantee a successful outcome. But there are no downsides to self-care.
10. Consider evidence-based add-ons – some may suit you, most won’t
Not every IVF add-on treatment is worth having. But some targeted options may be relevant in specific situations.
One example is hyaluronic acid-enriched transfer medium – embryo glue. A Cochrane review update reported higher live birth rates when embryos were transferred in the medium containing higher concentrations of hyaluronic. However, results still depend on a patient’s specific case.
Other add-ons are caught by the same proviso – they must be right for the patient. Whatever the add-on – assisted hatching, endometrial receptivity testing, endometrial scratching and immunology treatments among them – only your clinic can advise if they might help.
Final word
The best embryo transfer tips are the simple ones. Good timing. Good uterine preparation. The right number of embryos. Proper medication support.
And our best advice for after the big day? Stick to a natural and sensible lifestyle. Focus on the things you can control. And let the myths go.
Your questions answered
No. Research doesn’t show a benefit from bed rest after embryo transfer. Gentle, normal activity is usually fine. Prolonged rest may even be counterproductive. Follow your clinic’s advice, but most patients don’t need to stay in bed.
No. Once the embryo is placed inside the uterus, it can’t simply fall out if you stand up, walk, or go to the bathroom. The cervix doesn’t work like an open tube, and normal movement doesn’t dislodge an embryo.
Not always. For some patients, frozen embryo transfers can offer advantages, especially when hormone levels or endometrial preparation are less optimal in a fresh cycle. But the best choice depends on your diagnosis, embryo quality, and clinic strategy.
Sometimes, but not routinely. In many cases, one good-quality embryo gives the best balance of success and safety. Two embryos may raise the chance of twins, or even triplets – and related complications. This decision should be led by your fertility specialist.
Stress alone is not usually the reason a transfer fails. IVF is inherently stressful, and many people conceive during stressful periods. Still, reducing unnecessary stress can make the process more manageable and may help you cope better during the two-week wait.
It depends on your job. If your work is calm and not physically demanding, you may be able to return quickly. If it involves heavy lifting, long shifts, heat exposure, or extreme stress, a short break may be sensible.
Avoid excessive exercise, heavy lifting, overheating, hot tubs, alcohol, smoking, and anything that could interfere with your medications or recovery. Most everyday activities are fine. The aim is sensible, low-risk self-care.
Folic acid is not a direct implantation treatment, but it’s strongly recommended before conception and in early pregnancy because it helps reduce neural tube defects. It is a core part of preconception care for IVF patients.
Embryo glue is a transfer medium enriched with hyaluronic acid. Some evidence suggests it may improve live birth rates for certain IVF patients, but it’s not a universal fix. Whether it is worth using depends on your clinic and treatment history.
Follow your treatment plan closely and make sure the fundamentals are right: your uterus is ready, your medications are correct, and your clinic has a clear transfer plan. In IVF, solid basics beat myths and superstitions almost every time.

Had an IVF transfer on the 25th August. Now waiting for the pregnancy test. Hope to see a positive result. Had abstained from sex since the transfer, until after the pregnancy test because I was scared this would cause a problem.

I had my 3rd IVF transfer on 7th Sept, so i’m on my 3rd day now. I feel my breasts swelling and started feeling hungry and thirsty all the time. I don’t want to expect early that i’m experiencing early signs of pregnancy bec i did before my failed 2 IVFs. I pray that this 3rd transfer will be the perfect time. 7 days to go before the big announcement!

Hi Ladies. First and foremost, I wish all of you guys much success with your transfers. I am in the process of doing my second FET. My first one at age 40 was a fail and I was super sad but I hope this time around all goes well. During my first FET I wasn’t active for days after, but now that I read so many blogs as well as this one, I think this second time around at age 41 I will be a lot more active days after.
Again, keeping all of you in my prayers.
Hi Joan, I had Embryo transfered Saturday last week, this is my first attempt, I only have 2eggs (occyte) both mature but only one successful fertilised, so I only have one embryo. 3days to ‘the blood test’. I have been rest at home for a week now. I feel so nervous. I wish we all can be in same room, sharing our journey, and wishing luck to each other.
Hello Maria , I have the same worry as I will be transferring in February and I just have one embryo . My doctor has also said there is risk of the embryo not surging the thawing process . So a lot on my mind . How did yours go ?

Hi
I am 35 and my embryo transfer is today. I will be taking 3 4 days rest but not too much as that will just increase the stress. I m little nervous but preying everything will be alright and it will be successful. Good luck to all.
Good luck best wishes I had mine on Fri. 3 now praying that at least 1 comes good
Hello fellow IVFers!! Hope everyone is doing well, this such a stressful time, i just wanted to share my experiences with IVF.
I have done 2 fresh circles and on my 2nd FET. My first fresh circle didn’t work, i was 29 at the time and had 2 embrios implanted. It was a devastating time, but i did had an FET Afterwards, also failed. I don’t think there is a thing you can do for them to take, i have tried almost bed rest for the 2ww and i have been back to work, and on my 3rd fresh transfer (2 embrios) i just carried on as normal, at the end of the 2 ww i had period cramps so i wasn’t very hopeful…. and when i did get the dreaded phone call with the blood teat result, i nearly fainted when told it was positive. Best day ever as uou can imagine, after that 9 months of constant paranoia.
My son is now 2 and i can only say that don’t matter what you do, just don’t loose hope, it is like getting on the longest rollercoaster ever but be resilient.
I am currently on my 2nd day after FET, we had 2 frozen embrios and thought it was only fair to give them a chance, so yes, back on the rollercoaster…
Just keep distracted if possible and may your 2ww go as quick as possible.
Ps:i believe start folic acid before and during the treatment is very important.
All the very best.

HI Ekta..hope all went smoothly.

I don’t agree with your advice about transferring multiple or two embryos. I have identical twins in my family and twin studies they are participating in show that there is an greater risk of early menopause and osteoporosis in twins. There is also a much greater risk of cerebral palsy at birth. These factors need to be seriously weighed up before any decision is made.

It’s been 1 week since my FET…when can I have an orgasm ladies help! (Not intercourse)
Hey to be on safe side would just wait until have hcg checked first to avoid any cramping or irritation in the uterus. If anything confirm with your doctor.
After your first blood pregnancy test. Most often 11-14 days after implant

I am 35yrs to be 36 in july. I had 26 eggs during retrieval. 16 made it to day 5 blastocyst. 14 AA quality and 2 sub-quality. Had 2 embryo transfer and 12 AA freezed. I stayed in bed/rested all thru, unfortunately 2 days b4 my beta, i started cramping nd light then brownish spotting. My doctor suggested i go for blood test and my HCG was less than 1. A big fat negative. I am sooo depressed and devastated. I was doing sooo great with meds nd all.
Hi Abby,
I am so sorry for your loss.
Yes, you did all you could do. The implanting of the embryo, they say, is not really in our hands.
I am going to get an ET on Monday May 7, 2018.
A little nervous about the procedure. I am 41, my first attempt at IVF.
Wish you the best.
Sorry for what you are going through, i have myself gone through this scenario 6 times by now. I have started my new cycle and retrieval is on tentative 13th June, but this time only different we are doing from all last times is Biopsy of Embryos. I always had AA quality of embryo without success so we are taking it a step ahead to know if the embryo which looks good physically is actually good. the process is not abrasive and will not harm the baby. So if you want you can talk to your doctor about the same. I wish you All the Best.

Hello IVFers! Im on day 1 of my first IVF. Took my first shot today.’I’m 41years old. Believing this will go well and be successful.Any tips for me, especially on diet? I wish everyone success.
Be patient with yourself. The process can get to be very emotional, especially when there are unexpected setbacks. I’m 41 and I just finished my first round, and I’m praying constantly that I’m pregnant.
Good Luck

I am on day 9 of a FET (5-day blasto-cyst), my test date is 20th Feb. Had quite a bit of brown spotting this time (this is my 2nd try) and am trying to think positive, but it is hard, especially when you are second guessing each and every twinge and was so disappointed when we got the negative result last time.
Trying not to get our hopes up and stay as relaxed as possible, whilst being curiously excited (such a mixed bag of feelings!)
Also been getting very irritated (mostly with my other half over nothing) which isn’t great.
Fingers crossed this will all be worth it. These two weeks are the longest ever!! Such a roller coaster
Hope a goes well this time, Iam just on my last cycle, hoping to have my transfer at the end of the month.
We have to stay positive and relaxed.
Good Luck

Hi All my fellow Ivf sisters..
I’m pn my 3rd IVF cycle. 2nd one i became pregnant but miscarried that was devastating!! Im on my 3rd Cycle now.. It’s my 3rd day since ET. Not feeling the cramps like I was.
Is it ok to be stressing a little bit and be crying over trivial things??

Very informative, clearly detailed about IVF and diet during IVF. Very useful. Thanks for sharing..
I have just had a FET on Jan 31st 2022, I am going in on the 12th of February for a
Blood test..I really hope this works I am 31! I’ve had cramps every once in a while after day 3, a tiny bit of red spotting on day 7 after transfer that I noticed on the crinone gel applicator and some small back annoyances. I’m really hoping this has worked but man is this two week wait a mind screw excuse my language. This is something we want so bad. My only issue is my one tube wasn’t developed enough and the other was removed due to it burst when I was younger due to some other issues no other issues with my reproductive system as they also did a biopsy before.. I just really hope this takes any advice would be great. I also feel bloated, emotional and constipated but it could be from the medications I’m on progesterone, climara patch, crinone 8% gel, prednisone, asprin and also progesterone oil 2ML.. also used embryo glue.
Wishing all you ladies success in your journeys god bless!
Curious about the no alcohol rule leading up to embryo transfer. My husband and I are taking a little mini vacation to try to de-stress, it would be nice to have some drinks on the vacation before the transfer. I havn’t heard anything from my IVF clinic saying stay away from alcohol. Is there research suggesting to avoid alcohol before ET?
